The mystery of the burned sofa cushion is generating various stories. But Penny seems to be the only one who knows what really happened.
Willona visits the Evans while Florida is out, and she smells smoke. The couch cushion is almost thoroughly burnt. JJ, Michael, and Thelma each have different stories as to how the couch caught fire.
It's "Rashomon" time when the couch in the Evans living room catches fire. Under the baleful glare of Willona (Ja'net DuBois), each of the Evans kids -- J.J. (Jimmie Walker), Thelma (BernNadette Stanis), and Michael (Ralph Carter) -- has a different story as to what caused the conflagration. But only Willona's adopted daughter, Penny (Janet Jackson), knows the whole truth.
- J.J.: One good thing did come out of all of this.
- Willona: What's that?
- J.J.: We got rid of all Thelma's soup!
- Mandy (to Thelma): That casserole smell delicious. What is your secret ingredient?
- Thelma: Powdered chicken lips!
